We are on our fifth week of our CSA half-share. And it's the second big, heavy bagfull in a row.
Holy cucumbers, zucchini and onions, Batman!
The first week, I'll admit, we threw spoilt food out. A trip to Canada for five days didn't help. But I'm getting better!
Most surprising daily staple? Cabbage. Now, I've liked coleslaw for as long as I can remember. Well, most types of coleslaw. But I haven't made any yet. Instead, I've been throwing it in my stir fry at the end of cooking - just before the sesame oil. Yum!
Second most surprising? Kohlrabi. Well, not that it lasts any longer than the first day or two. It's too easy to munch on a whole kohlrabi in one sitting!
I'm still intimidated by the beets, though. I ... am not quite sure how to approach them. theperfumer seems to have successfully roasted them in her travels, but I'm not sure if they are good as left overs?
And peppers! I'm well acquainted to bell peppers, but I'm not sure what to do with any other kind of pepper. Banana peppers Tim will eat. But some are hot yellow peppers. Maybe I'll have to try making salsa one of these days (when we get more tomatoes)...
I can usually eat about one cucumber a day, if I remind myself. Our first batch came last week and I think I ate two of the five. Oops. Another big batch in today's bag. They make me burp, though, so there's that hesitation as well.
Tim is usually pretty good at convincing me to eat yellow summer squash and zucchini in a stirfry, but holy Hannah. We've got about ten pounds from last week and another ten pounds this week!
I am worried that it will go bad before we get to it all. I have no concept of how long fresh produce will keep.
You can laugh at me for asking this stupid question. I buy onions at the grocery store (unrefrigerated with no greens) and keep them in a drawer until I cut the outer layer off or cut into the bulb. Then I put the remainder in a Pyrex container in the fridge. Can I do the same with these fresher onions? Or should they be refrigerated? Does the presence of the greens change your answer?
After the last couple of weeks where I've been basically stir frying every night, I'm getting eager for another way to eat these veggies. But I don't want to have to cook very long. Basically, I get home from work an hour away from ravenous hunger, so the sooner I can avoid panicked face-stuffing, the better. The meal is just for me, too, so there's that.
I've brought salads to work from time to time for lunch, but have not been very regular about it. Part of the issue is protein. And meal planning. In that I'd rather sleep in in the morning than cook. Something I need to get better at.
It does give me joy, though, when I finished off the broccoli last night and the green beans tonight, just in time for another delivery of each. Yum!
I don't know if Tim is overjoyed with the CSA, though. I think he is also intimidated by the pressure of eating all these vegetables. So far, I'm pretty convinced to do this again next year. :)
