jillithian: (cooking)

We are on our fifth week of our CSA half-share. And it's the second big, heavy bagfull in a row.

Holy cucumbers, zucchini and onions, Batman!

The first week, I'll admit, we threw spoilt food out. A trip to Canada for five days didn't help. But I'm getting better!

Most surprising daily staple? Cabbage. Now, I've liked coleslaw for as long as I can remember. Well, most types of coleslaw. But I haven't made any yet. Instead, I've been throwing it in my stir fry at the end of cooking - just before the sesame oil. Yum!

Second most surprising? Kohlrabi. Well, not that it lasts any longer than the first day or two. It's too easy to munch on a whole kohlrabi in one sitting!

I'm still intimidated by the beets, though. I ... am not quite sure how to approach them. [livejournal.com profile] theperfumer seems to have successfully roasted them in her travels, but I'm not sure if they are good as left overs?

And peppers! I'm well acquainted to bell peppers, but I'm not sure what to do with any other kind of pepper. Banana peppers Tim will eat. But some are hot yellow peppers. Maybe I'll have to try making salsa one of these days (when we get more tomatoes)...

I can usually eat about one cucumber a day, if I remind myself. Our first batch came last week and I think I ate two of the five. Oops. Another big batch in today's bag. They make me burp, though, so there's that hesitation as well.

Tim is usually pretty good at convincing me to eat yellow summer squash and zucchini in a stirfry, but holy Hannah. We've got about ten pounds from last week and another ten pounds this week!

I am worried that it will go bad before we get to it all. I have no concept of how long fresh produce will keep.

You can laugh at me for asking this stupid question. I buy onions at the grocery store (unrefrigerated with no greens) and keep them in a drawer until I cut the outer layer off or cut into the bulb. Then I put the remainder in a Pyrex container in the fridge. Can I do the same with these fresher onions? Or should they be refrigerated? Does the presence of the greens change your answer?

After the last couple of weeks where I've been basically stir frying every night, I'm getting eager for another way to eat these veggies. But I don't want to have to cook very long. Basically, I get home from work an hour away from ravenous hunger, so the sooner I can avoid panicked face-stuffing, the better. The meal is just for me, too, so there's that.

I've brought salads to work from time to time for lunch, but have not been very regular about it. Part of the issue is protein. And meal planning. In that I'd rather sleep in in the morning than cook. Something I need to get better at.

It does give me joy, though, when I finished off the broccoli last night and the green beans tonight, just in time for another delivery of each. Yum!

I don't know if Tim is overjoyed with the CSA, though. I think he is also intimidated by the pressure of eating all these vegetables. So far, I'm pretty convinced to do this again next year. :)

Commuter

I've been trying to bike commute at least once a week starting the beginning of April and I've kept up with it. This is awesome in many ways. I feel happier during the day. I can give myself a pass on the daily "not exercising enough" self-loathing I'm apt to do.

Today was especially lovely on the way home. I'm lucky in that I have only a 4 mile commute and I get to pick which side of the Mississippi River I'm going to bike on. The bike route through Sauk Rapids goes along the east side of the river through their municipal park. It's wooded in many areas which is especially nice on hot, sunny bike commutes home.

The last two weeks I decided to take a different route TO work, going along the west bank of the river, around the edge of a roundabout and crossing a highway. Fewer hills and slightly shorter ride. I haven't gotten brave enough to come home that way yet. The bike path is only on one side of the street and, as the street has a roundabout (very new concept in MN) and goes past the new Walmart (doesn't mix well), I am wary of trying it. I've seen plenty of bicyclists go that way but have yet to see them go through thy questionable patch. Maybe one day.

I have aspirations of taking the Northstar Rail down to Minneapolis with my bicycle and riding around all the trails and paths there. I like to take Tim with me, but he is not quite so avid. I think it sounds more like work to him than fun.

Tim got me two large "market" panniers for my birthday which work AWESOME for commuting to work and for grocery shopping. I'm thinking of going beer shopping with them later tonight. Trying to use my bike for more of my shorter trips, if I can.

Yup. My bike works pretty awesome so far. I really like it and am glad I bought it. My coworker told me he made his 1,000th bike commute this week and got his 600th mile in so far this year. Something to aspire to.

Went to the twins game today and they won so that was good.

Bought matching iPhone's yesterday because we are nerds like that. The lady at the AT&T store kept saying "Aw" about us having matching phones. Little does she know that we are both so competitive that we HAVE to have matching phones. She doesn't have to hear Tim constantly compare our two relatively new vehicles.

And yes. I am posting from my iPhone now. It takes a bit to get used to typing on it. I don't recommend using the Skype app for any large group chatting - it takes forever to load previous conversations and mostly just froze my phone. I also was able to kill the default calendar app TWICE by entering all of our friends' birthdays. But otherwise I am a happy camper.

And to be completely honest, I am typing this on my phone while sitting in front of my computer that is on and connected to the Internet
